Gary: My decision to stay away from drugs is imprinted in my mind forever. It was a beautiful fall afternoon. I was playing basketball in the backyard with friends. Behind the area where we were playing there was a large field that was covered with summer growth. All of a sudden, we heard the roar of a motorcycle, and we looked up to see the motorcycle cross the road, and fly off into the field. We raced to the site of the accident, and realized that the rider was seriously injured. One of my friends ran back to his house and called for help. We tried to talk to the rider of the motorcycle, but he never stopped screaming long enough to hear what we were trying to say. Soon the paramedics arrived and carefully untangled him from the motorcycle, put him in the ambulance and drove off. I don’t think I’ll ever remove that image from my mind. I felt so sorry for the young man and so helpless.

The following week, we found out that the young man was heavily drugged when he ran off the road. That’s the night I promised myself that I would never try drugs. I don’t know what happened to the young man, whether he lived or died. But I knew that I did not want to walk that road.
